GreenMicrofinance Certification™ for MFIs

GreenMicrofinance Certificationcreates an environmental sustainability education and certification program for Microfinance Institutions (MFIs).

[The certification was initially conceived by GMf team in 2005.  In 2007, it was further refined and named the GMf Green Energy Star™ Certification.   Today it is known as the GreenMicrofinance Certification for MFIs.]

The program empowers banks to become more aware of the environmental ramifications of their activities and thereby encourage banks to become more environmentally sustainable operationally.  It is anticipated during the process that they will become advocates and developers of sustainable micro-businesses through their lending practices. It will eventually lead to the entire community served by the MFI being environmentally conscious and self sufficient in energy using green technologies.

The certification brand is a key indicator to donors and lenders that GreenMicrofinance Certified Banks are implementing policies and procedures to ensure sustainable and responsible business practices and that lending procedures are integrated into the MFI operational model.

Project Description:  To provide for certification training and “green-auditing” banks.

Higher rated banks will receive favorable consideration for infrastructure development funding and lending bridge loans, as environmental issues have become a top global concern.
